Project Details: Historic Renovation, Carmel

Total Square Footage: 3,200 sq. ft.

This project was the renovation and addition to a home listed on the National Historic Register in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Noted poet Robinson Jeffers and others frequented the home in its early years. The design kept the integrity and historicity of the existing home by installing new hand milled redwood shingles on the exterior, that are an exact replacement of the existing shingles.

To expand the home, an addition was added and sheathed in shingles half the size of the existing, allowing the addition to be seen as separate but seamlessly integrated to the original historic structure. The floor plan was reconfigured to open up living spaces that provided expansive views of the Pacific Ocean from all areas, creating a voluminous experience of light, water and air throughout the home.
